Join us in Historic

Washington, Missouri

for the Annual Meeting,

November 1-3, 2018

Co-presidents Meredith Rau and Annie Fuller have been planning for a rich celebration of rivers and railroads and the folk that travelled them. Papers, presentations, demonstrations, storytelling, and of course the benefit auction.

We will be at the heart of downtown Washington, Missouri, on the east-central side of the state.  The Jesuit Hall is just a block from the old Meerschaum Corn Cob Pipe Factory, two blocks from the Missouri River and Railroad Depot, and centered in the heart of Washington’s art & retail district.   Come experience all the riches this river town has to offer!

Keynote speakers will highlight the rich heritage of the region and help us explore aspects central to our folk studies.  While embracing the traditional trades of folklore, oral history, and interdisciplinary examinations of the past, we hope these Rivers & Railroads can be intersections for us to welcome new avenues folklore study in today’s 2018 world.

We look forward to exploring Washington with you! Come join us to learn, share, and enliven our lives with a rich examination of our “Folk!” There will be a ghost tour, a winery tour and a pipe-smoking tutorial by the makers of the genuine Missouri Meerschaum, the original corncob pipe.

But we can't do it without you. Click here for the Call for Participation, and let us know if you'll be presenting -- we also need people to chair sessions, to work the registration table and the book room. The CFP also contains the registration form for the meeting. PLEASE GET YOUR RESPONSE TO US BY OCTOBER 12!

Bring an item for the auction, bring an instrument for the Thursday and Friday night jams!

2018 MISSOURI FOLKLORE SOCIETY MEETING ACCOMODATIONS

        Super 8 Washington, MO 636-390-0088

A block of 10 accessible rooms has been reserved at a conference rate of $85.39 plus tax for Missouri Folklore Society participants at the Super 8 Hotel at 2081 Eckelkamp Court, Washington, MO 63090.  It includes a continental breakfast and freshly baked cookies at 7:00pm. We will have coffee and pastries at the conference.

In order to receive the Conference rate, reservations must be made four weeks beforehand, in this case by October 1st.  To contact the Super 8, you may phone 636-390-0088 and mention being part of our group.  They only allowed us to hold 10 rooms, but the regular night rate for this is not much different, so if you miss the group rate deadline, you should be fine.

However, Washington does not have a lot of hotel options, so I suggest you book your room soon.  I have listed out some other options below.

I have also reserved an AirBnB House in my name that has room for up to 16 people.  I am accepting requests to join my AirBnB reservation up through October 12th.  If you are interested in joining this reservation, email me at Meredith.rau@gmail.com.  I will share the details of this location with those who request. The basic details of the house are: 2 couches & 7 king sized beds.  It’s 5 blocks from the Conference location and will cost around $85.00 total per person for a Thursday Night-Saturday Day Reservation. I will approve requests to join this based on first-come-first serve basis and/or need.  I prefer to hold a couple spots as affordable options for students, so contact me if you have any you think may be interested.
