In Memoriam:
Plantonio, the Pride of the Plains
September 10, 1987 - August 16, 2001

(from the MFS Newsletter)

A past honorary president of MFS has left us. He will miss attending board meetings and conventions, but his songs should endure. Those who were at the MFS meeting in Sikeston in 1999 may remember that Cecil Williams wrote a song for Plantonio -- one of two written in his honor. MFS member and composer Irwin Rice also wrote a song for Plantonio, first performed (if we recall correctly) at the convention in Hannibal in 1998.

Plantonio, You're the Pride of the Plains

by Cecil Williams

Pluto, Plato, Plantonio -- you're the pride of the Plains.
What's in a name?
Pluto the Greek philosopher? Plato the Greek philosopher?
Pluto the Planet or Pluto the Greek mythological God of the Underworld?
Typhon and his wife had a three-headed dog named Cerberus.
You're not Lassie--Rin Tin Tin--Temple Hound.
Jim the Wonder Dog? Nah. Huckleberry Hound? I don't think so.
What's that you say?
Of course we all know who you are!
Plantonio, you're the Pride of the Plains.

Chorus:
Plantonio, the Pride of the Plains,
Plantonio, the Pride of the Plains.

Maybe you're not from the Plains of the Serengeti
Or Pecos, come from the west.
If you are, I believe you're the best of the best;
You ain't nothin' but a dog.
All I know is what I see--you're no mystery to me.
Little grey ball of fur, large dark eyes, wet little nose,
Perky little ears, pink tongue and two little paws.

Plantonio, the Pride of the Plains,
Plantonio, the Pride of the Plains.

What the heck. I've never heard you bark, whimper or cry.
And I've known you for a while.
Born of a dog but the soul of a being.
Do I care? Now you listen to me--
If you are loved by friends and family
Or members of the Missouri Folklore Society,
That includes me! You bet I care.
And again I must say every dog has his day--
And I guess that it's true.
Therefore, this ballad's for you.
Plantonio, Pride of the Plains.
Plantonio, pride of Liz and Clyde,
Plantonio, pride of Liz and Clyde.

Now I'll tip my hat to you.
Before I go, I've got one thing to say--
You ain't nothin' but a dog!
Plantonio, Plantonio, you're the Pride of the Plains,
Plantonio, Plantonio, you're the Pride of the Plains.
